Title card reading: How to write a Reddit reply that mentions your product honestly

A good Reddit reply that mentions your product answers the question first, names other options fairly, says plainly that you built the product, and leaves out the link unless the community allows it. If the reply would still help someone who never tries your product, you have written it well. If it only makes sense as an advert, rewrite it or skip the thread.

This guide breaks a good reply into parts, shows examples of weak and strong replies, and covers the mistakes that get replies removed.

Why the reply matters more than the thread

Finding the right thread gets you in front of a buyer. The reply decides whether they trust you. Readers on Reddit compare answers side by side, and they are quick to spot a pitch. A reply that teaches something earns upvotes and follow-up questions. A reply that reads like marketing gets ignored, downvoted or removed by moderators.

This is the core skill behind the routine in How to Market a SaaS Product When Nobody Knows It Exists.

The five parts of an honest reply

1. Answer the question first

Start with the most useful thing you know about the problem, as if you had no product at all. Steps, settings, a rule of thumb, a mistake to avoid. Be specific. "It depends on your setup" is not an answer; "for under five people, a shared calendar with buffer times is enough" is.

2. Name other options fairly

If there are good tools for this problem, say so, including competitors. Readers already know them, and leaving them out makes you look either uninformed or sneaky. Saying where each one fits shows that you understand the problem.

3. Say who you are, plainly

If your product fits, mention it with a clear disclosure in the same sentence: "I built X, so I'm biased" or "Full disclosure: I work on X." Do not hide it at the end or in your username. Reddit's sitewide rules ask people to take part authentically, and many communities require you to disclose any connection to what you mention.

4. Say who it is for, and who it is not for

Be honest about fit. "It's built for clinics, so if you're a solo coach it's probably overkill" builds more trust than claiming it suits everyone.

Many communities remove replies with promotional links. If someone is interested, they will search for the name or ask you. If the subreddit allows links and someone asks for one, share it in a follow-up comment.

A weak reply and a strong reply

The question: "Any tool for tracking which customers haven't paid yet? Spreadsheets are killing me."

A weak reply:

Check out InvoiceBot! It's the best invoicing tool and makes tracking payments super easy. Link in my profile!

No answer, no disclosure, no fit and a push to click. This will probably be removed.

A strong reply:

Before any tool: add a "due date" and "paid date" column and sort by "unpaid, oldest first". That alone fixes most of the chaos. If you want it automatic, most accounting tools (Wave, FreshBooks, Xero) show an aged receivables report. Full disclosure: I built a small invoicing tool for freelancers that sends payment reminders on a schedule, so I'm biased. It's probably overkill if you only have a handful of clients a month. Happy to share the reminder wording that worked best for us if useful.

It solves the problem first, names options, discloses the connection, admits where it does not fit and offers more help without a link.

Mistakes that get replies removed

  • Pasting the same reply into several threads.
  • Mentioning the product in threads it does not fit.
  • Disclosing only in your username or profile.
  • Editing a link into a reply after it gets upvotes.
  • Asking friends or colleagues to upvote you.
  • Arguing with people who disagree, or with moderators.

Stay in the conversation

The first reply is half the work. When someone asks a follow-up, answer it properly. When someone says your product did not suit them, thank them and ask why. These exchanges are often read more closely than the original reply, and they show you are a real person who knows the problem.

A checklist before you post

  • Would this reply help someone who never tries the product?
  • Did I name other options fairly?
  • Is the disclosure in the same sentence as the mention?
  • Did I say who it is not for?
  • Does this community allow product mentions, and links?

Getting help with drafts

Writing replies like this every week takes time. Veeted's Reddit inbox finds recent and evergreen threads where buyers ask for advice and drafts a reply for the brand to post from its own account. Veeted rejects Reddit drafts that contain links or mention the product without saying who it is from. Veeted checks whether posted Reddit replies are still live and reports clicks from each one. To see which threads would suit your product, get a free campaign plan. Veeted's free campaign plan takes a website URL and returns video angles, creators to brief and Reddit threads in under a minute, with no signup or card. You can also send us a brief.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mention my own product in a Reddit reply?

Often yes, if the community allows it, your product genuinely fits the question and you disclose your connection plainly. Check each subreddit's rules on self-promotion first.

How should I disclose that I built the product?

In the same sentence as the mention, for example "I built X, so I'm biased" or "Full disclosure: I work on X." A disclosure only in your username or profile is not enough.

Should I include a link in my Reddit reply?

Only if the community allows links. Many remove promotional links. Interested readers will search for the name or ask, and you can share a link in a follow-up if allowed.

Why was my Reddit reply removed?

Common reasons are a promotional link, no disclosure, the same text posted in several threads, or a mention in a thread the product does not fit. Read the rule the moderator cites and adjust.
