To find Reddit threads where people ask for product recommendations, search for the exact phrases buyers use when they want a tool ("any app for", "alternative to", "what do you use for"), both inside the subreddits your buyers read and on Google with site:reddit.com. Then sort what you find by how recent it is, whether it still ranks, and whether your product genuinely fits.
This guide shows the search phrases that work, how to use Reddit and Google search together, how to tell a good thread from a waste of time, and a simple weekly routine for keeping a list.
Why recommendation threads are worth finding
Someone asking "what's the best tool for X?" has already decided they have a problem and want to solve it. That is the most valuable moment to be useful. These threads also stay readable for years, and many rank in Google for the same question, so a good answer keeps being seen long after it is posted.
Finding them is the first step of the weekly routine in How to Market a SaaS Product When Nobody Knows It Exists.
Start with the phrases buyers use
People do not ask for "a workflow automation platform". They ask in plain words. Build a list of phrases in four groups:
| Group | Example phrases |
|---|---|
| Looking for a tool | "any tool for", "is there an app that", "looking for software to" |
| Switching | "alternative to [competitor]", "[competitor] too expensive", "moving away from [competitor]" |
| Asking how others do it | "how do you handle", "what do you use for", "how are you tracking" |
| Comparing | "[tool A] vs [tool B]", "worth paying for", "which is better" |
Fill in the brackets with your real competitors and your buyer's real task. "Alternative to [competitor]" threads are often the best, because the person already knows what they want and why the current option is not working.
Search inside Reddit
Reddit's own search is useful for recent threads.
- Go to a subreddit your buyer reads and search one phrase at a time.
- Sort by New to find questions the asker is still watching.
- Sort by Top with a past-year filter to find threads that drew a lot of answers.
- Open the thread and read the replies before deciding. If ten people already gave your answer, adding an eleventh helps no one.
Search the communities on your shortlist first. Searching all of Reddit returns a lot of noise from communities where your buyer does not spend time.
Search with Google
Google is better for older threads that still get read, because it shows you what ranks. Add site:reddit.com before your phrase to limit results to Reddit. Google explains how this and other operators work in its guide to search operators.
Some useful patterns:
site:reddit.com "alternative to" [competitor]site:reddit.com "any tool for" [task]site:reddit.com/r/[subreddit] "what do you use for"
Use quotation marks around the phrase to match it exactly. A thread that appears on the first page for a buyer's question is worth a careful answer even if it is a year old, provided it is still open for comments.
How to tell a good thread from a bad one
Before you write anything, check each thread against a few questions:
- Does your product actually fit? If it solves a different version of the problem, skip it.
- Is it still open? Archived threads cannot take new comments.
- Does the community allow mentions? Check the subreddit's rules on self-promotion first.
- Is the asker still around? For recent threads, look at whether they reply to answers.
- Is there room for a useful answer? If the best answer is already there, move on.
A thread that passes all five is worth twenty minutes. Most threads will not pass, and that is fine.
Keep a simple list
Track what you find in a sheet with one row per thread:
- Link
- The question, in one line
- Age, and whether it ranks on Google
- Fit (yes, partly, no)
- Status (to answer, answered, skipped)
Review it weekly. After a month the list tells you which phrases and communities produce the threads worth answering, and you can drop the rest.
A weekly routine
- Monday: run your saved Google searches and note new or newly ranking threads.
- Every day: check the "New" sort in your shortlisted subreddits for a few minutes.
- Twice a week: answer the best one or two threads properly.
- Friday: check replies on what you posted, and update the list.
Once you have found a thread, the reply decides whether it helps. Lead with a real answer, name other options, and say plainly if you built a product that fits.
Let the threads come to you
Searching by hand works, but it is easy to stop once other work gets busy. Veeted's Reddit inbox finds recent and evergreen threads where buyers ask for advice and drafts a reply for the brand to post from its own account. Veeted rejects Reddit drafts that contain links or mention the product without saying who it is from. To see the threads it would find for your product, get a free campaign plan. Frequently asked questions
How do I search Reddit with Google?
Add site:reddit.com before your search phrase, for example site:reddit.com "alternative to" followed by a competitor name. Put the phrase in quotation marks to match it exactly.
Which Reddit threads are best for SaaS companies?
Threads where someone asks for a tool, an alternative to a competitor, or how others handle a problem your product solves. "Alternative to" threads are often the strongest because the asker knows what they want.
Should I answer old Reddit threads?
Yes, if the thread is still open and ranks on Google for a buyer's question. People keep reading those threads, so a useful answer keeps being seen.
How many Reddit threads should I answer each week?
Quality matters more than volume. Two careful answers a week in threads your product fits will do more than many quick replies.
